The Greater Lithgow Arts Council Finalist Award Night will be held on Friday the 27th March at 7:30 p.m. at the Union Theatre, Bridge St Lithgow.

The Greater Lithgow Arts Council works to recognise and support the broad spectrum of the arts in the Lithgow and surrounding areas. The Greater Lithgow Arts Council receive a number of nominations from within the community providing us with information on the excellent cultural achievements of individuals and groups in the Lithgow District Area throughout the year.

We would like to invite the Lithgow community to attend in recognising all the nominees for 2014/15. The night will include the presentation of the major award winner of each section, Youth, Adult and Group as well as live entertainment and light supper and refreshments. It is asked that there is a gold coin donation at the door per person.

The Greater Lithgow Arts Council are currently seeking sponsorship, after a long association with their major sponsor, is no longer available.

The Nominees for 2014/15 are :

Youth Section

Aminah Baker who is a young talented musician was selected to perform a solo on the descant recorder at the Sydney Opera House for the NSW Festival of Music, representing Lithgow PS and the town with a mature and beautiful performance; Callum Woodrow is a student at Mitchell Conservatorium for 7 years learning percussion, currently specifically the xylophone and has achieved excellent results in music exams and is a member of school music groups and regularly performs at concerts and competes in eisteddfods and selected in the Opera Australia’s Regional Conservatorium Project; Benny Fair has been singing all his life, growing up in a local church, he has been inspired by music. He is a regular performer for community events, as well as placing 1st at many eisteddfods across a wide variety of genres including musical theatre, popular solo, jazz and blues. He has participated in national competitions such as X Factor which gave him the opportunity to sing in front of an audience of 7000 at Allphones arena.

Adult section

In performing arts, the following people have been nominated for their outstanding contribution to the cultural life of the Lithgow area: Gustaw Szelski as a talented musician, namely violinist, conductor, musical director and integral leader of the Lithgow Community Orchestra; Martin Doherty who is a local living legend and prolific songwriter, has co-produced albums and gives his time freely for community events; Don White for his lifetime dedication as a teacher, facilitator of workshops, supporting local schools and a wide set of skills including his recent project ‘1915’and Jeanette Dean who’s skills and talent in arts and crafts including sewing, knitting and crochet has been recognised in many exhibitions as well as her promotion of Lithgow art culture through Sweet Briar House and Craft Shop.

Group Section

Helen Drewe, Suzanne Lollback Robert Coveny and Ken Durie for their publication of ‘Native Plants of Hassans Walls Reserve Lithgow’: This group have produced a publication of exceptional quality which is highly informative and beautifully put together. This book ensures a continued appreciation of the natural wonders in the Lithgow area.  Lithgow High School “Guys and Dolls”: was of outstanding quality and a credit to the students and Mrs Rae Burton for their contribution to the Arts of the Lithgow District. The production showcased the skills, talents and dedication of the Lithgow High School Students, both on and off the stage., producing shows of exceptional standard and that made the story and characters come to life. Lithgow Musical Society production of “Annie” was a wonderful family friendly show which captured the eye of a wide range of ages. The production showcased a wide range of talents and skills of the cast and crew, which enabled the show that came to life on stage.  The singing, clever acting and stage production reflected the dedication of all members of the society, resulting in a wonderful performance which was a thoroughly enjoyable experience that had you laughing and singing your way throughout the show.
